Getting Started & Basics

Health Auto Export offers two main ways to export your health data:

Manual Export:

Automated Exports:

Both methods support CSV and JSON formats, with JSON providing more detailed information for complex data types like sleep phases and AFib readings.

Health Auto Export supports a comprehensive range of health data types:

Health Metrics:

  • Activity metrics (steps, active energy, exercise time, VO2 Max, etc.)
  • Body measurements (height, weight, BMI, body fat percentage, etc.)
  • Cardiovascular (heart rate, blood pressure, HRV, etc.)
  • Mobility & walking metrics
  • Respiratory (respiratory rate, blood oxygen, etc.)
  • Sleep analysis and breathing disturbances
  • Vital signs (body temperature, basal body temperature)
  • Nutrition (macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc.)
  • Lifestyle (sexual activity, alcohol consumption, mindful minutes, etc.)
  • Environmental (audio exposure, UV exposure, time in daylight, etc.)

Workouts:

  • All workout types with comprehensive metadata
  • GPS routes (exportable as GPX files)
  • Time-series data for metrics during workouts

Symptoms:

  • All Apple Health symptoms across categories (abdominal, constitutional, heart & lung, neurological, reproductive, skin & hair, sleep, urinary)

Cycle Tracking:

  • Menstrual flow, cervical mucus quality, ovulation tests, pregnancy tests, and more

Medications:

  • Medication logs, dosages, scheduled times, and adherence (iOS 26.0+)

State of Mind:

  • Mood entries, valence ratings, labels, and associations (iOS 18.0+)

ECG:

  • Electrocardiogram readings with voltage measurements and classifications

Heart Rate Notifications:

  • High/low heart rate events, AFib notifications, with detailed heart rate and HRV data

For a complete list, see the Supported Data guide.

Automations

  • Run automatically in the background
  • Are affected by iOS background limits
  • Best for ongoing syncing and backups

Manual Export

  • Runs immediately when triggered
  • Allows large historical exports
  • Best for one-time data sharing or analysis

Many users use both:

  • Automations for daily sync
  • Manual export for historical data
Privacy & Security

No. Health Auto Export does not collect, store, or share your health data with third parties.

The app only reads your Apple Health data when:

  • You manually trigger an export
  • An automation runs (which you configure)
  • You view data in the app or widgets

All data processing happens locally on your device. When you export:

  • Manual exports are shared directly from your device (via AirDrop, email, etc.)
  • Automated exports go only to destinations you configure (your cloud storage, your web service, etc.)
  • Sync to Mac transfers data via iCloud. Only you can access this data and it can be deleted by at any time

The app requires HealthKit read permissions to export your data, but this data is never sent to the developer or any third-party services. Your health data remains private and under your control.

This depends on the export destination.

  • Cloud providers (iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox): encrypted by the provider
  • REST API: depends on your endpoint (HTTPS recommended)
  • Local server (TCP/MCP): unencrypted, intended for trusted local networks only
Sync & Automation

Health Auto Export cannot sync at a guaranteed time or fixed interval.

iOS only allows apps to access Apple Health data:

  • When your iPhone is unlocked
  • When iOS grants background execution time

Even if you configure a frequent sync cadence, iOS ultimately decides when the automation runs based on system conditions like battery level, device usage, and available resources.

What to expect in practice:

  • Daily syncs work well for most users
  • More frequent syncs may run opportunistically, not on a strict schedule
  • Exact times (e.g. midnight) are not guaranteed

This is almost always due to iOS background restrictions, not an app bug.

Common reasons:

  • Your phone was locked for long periods
  • Low Power Mode was enabled
  • Background App Refresh is disabled
  • The system delayed background tasks

What helps:

  • Unlock your phone periodically
  • Add the Automations Widget to your Home Screen
  • Trigger a manual export if you need immediate data

No. This is an iOS limitation.

Apple does not allow apps to read health data while the device is locked. As a result:

  • Automations only run when your phone is unlocked
  • Widgets also require the device to be unlocked to refresh

This applies to all HealthKit-based apps, not just Health Auto Export.

Export Issues

This usually means the app does not have permission to read the selected health data.

Common causes:

  • Apple Health permissions were denied
  • For medications, permissions were not granted per medication

How to fix:

  1. Open the Apple Health app
  2. Go to Sharing → Apps → Health Auto Export
  3. Ensure the relevant data types are enabled

For Medications specifically:

  • Open Apple Health → Medications
  • Tap each medication individually
  • Open Data Sources & Access
  • Enable Health Auto Export for that medication

Manual exports can be resource-intensive, especially with:

  • Large date ranges
  • Many selected metrics
  • Minute- or second-level aggregation

If exports fail:

  • Reduce the date range
  • Export fewer data types at once
  • Use hourly or daily aggregation instead of minutes/seconds
  • Try exporting metrics separately
Features & Capabilities

No. Health Auto Export accesses health and fitness-related data.

Use Health Record Export to export medical health records.

Requirements:

  • Your Apple Health app must be connected to a healthcare organization
  • Clinical Records export is available in JSON format

Clinical Records include lab results, medical test results, and other clinical data that healthcare providers share with Apple Health. The clinical records will be included in your export if they are available in your Apple Health data.

  3. Apple will review your request and process it according to their refund policy
